Berthold Albrecht was a German businessman and heir to the Aldi supermarket chain. He was born on November 28, 1954, in Essen, Germany, and was the son of Theo Albrecht, one of the founders of Aldi. Berthold Albrecht was known for being very private and avoiding the media spotlight.
He reportedly studied economics and joined Aldi in 1977, starting from the bottom as a trainee and working his way up the ranks. He was a co-owner of the Aldi Nord group, which operates over 2,500 stores in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and other countries.
Berthold Albrecht died on November 17, 2012, at the age of 58. The official cause of death was not disclosed, but it was reported that he had suffered from a serious illness for some time. He was succeeded by his mother, Cäcilie Albrecht, and his brother, Theo Jr., in running the Aldi Nord retail empire.
